About Jan Gossaert

Gossaert, Jan (1478/1488? - 1533/1536?) called Mabuse, was considered by many to be the first Dutch painter of the Renaissance. He became a master in Antwerp in 1503 and did royal portraits for Spain and Flanders. In the North, Mabuse was one of the earliest representatives of the Mannerist style, which he possibly learned during his trip to Italy. In essence, Gossaert was a Mannerist in the miniaturist tradition. His high-polished forms and pristine interiors suited his princely patrons well. To Mabuse, the goal of his artistic endeavors was to paint things with an illusion of reality that no one else would be capable of. Gossaert influenced a number of other masters, such as van Orley, Lucas van Leyden, and Jan van Scorel.
